My name is Gene Whitford and I live in Florida.
My Mother was having a gathering or party at our house in Orlando, FL a while ago. I don't recall the occasion but I remember that I didn't feel like socializing so I drove out to her place in the country about 20 miles away to spend the night by myself. When I got there, I realized that I had left the keys to her property in town at our house so I had to drive all the way back into town to get them. I started thinking that "Bad stuff like this always happens to me." and I thought about Murphy's Law, which states that, "If anything can go wrong, it will". Then, I caught myself and realized that if I think that bad stuff always happens to me (Like in Murphy's Law) that it will only attract stuff into my life that I don't want. As I was thinking this on the way back to Orlando, I saw a street sign that said "Murphy's Street" (Which made me think about Murphy's Law again and how I didn't want to think like that). So I figured that I would make my own law (Gene's Law) that says, "If anything can go well, it will". The next day after I thought of my law (Or very soon after) I got a check in the mail for a few thousand dollars from my trust fund. So I thought maybe there might be something to this way of thinking. After that, I told a few friends about my "Gene's Law" idea. A while later, a friend of mine named Mike who lives in Gainesville, Florida told me a story about a girl who was staying at his house for a while. He said that she was having a hard time and bad stuff was happening to her a lot. She said that it was like Murphy's Law. So Mike told her that maybe she should try Gene's Law instead. He said that she liked the idea and that she wanted to adopt my law instead of Murphy's Law. He told me that, for at least a little while after that, things seemed to go better for her.
So then Mike told me that if I made my law into a bumper sticker that he would put one on his car. I thought that it might be a good idea so I ordered 1500 bumper stickers that just said, "If anything can go well, it will".
October 2nd 2007 I was getting ready to go to my dentist where I was scheduled to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed.
One of my Mothers employees called me from her herb shop that day and told me that my bumper stickers had just arrived in the mail. I told her that I couldn't get them yet because I had to go to the dentist right then and that I would get them after I got back.
I went to the dentist and got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted. The process wasn't very painful. I took one pain pill afterwards, anticipating that it might be painful. The pain pill didn't seem to work but I wasn't in much pain anyways. My gums were sore that night but tolerable. Pain wise, the tooth extraction went about as well as it possibly could have. It seemed that "Gene's Law" was in full effect that day.
You only get your wisdom teeth removed once in your life and for me it was the day that my "Gene's Law" bumper stickers first arrived. It made me think of "Gene's Wisdom" as well.
I am amazed at the great response that I have gotten from the stickers so far. I would never have guessed that people would like them so much. This may be one of the best bumper sticker ideas of all time, from what I have seen so far. Since I first started having them made, I have distributed well over 12,000 of them in my two main stomping grounds of Orlando and Gainesville. (Maybe over 15,000 at this point actually). I have never, until just last week, outright sold them to anyone. Last week (around September 1st 2010) I sold 30 of them to a woman in North Carolina and sent them to her in the mail. Until then I had only given them away for free. They are now all over Orlando and Gainesville. I predict that they will, eventually, be on cars in every state in the USA. From the feedback that I've gotten so far, people have told me that they were going to send or take at least one to the fallowing 18 countries: Bosnia, Uruguay, Columbia, Ecuador, The Philippines, Iraq, Mongolia, Cambodia, Poland, Germany, England, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Chile, Australia, Holland, The Ukraine and Canada. From what I have heard there is even one on a taxicab somewhere in India. (And those are just the countries that I have heard about them going to).
A few months after I first started having them made, a friend of mine said that she liked them but that she would only put one on her car if they had my name on them. So I had some made that actually say, "GENE'S LAW" above the words "If anything can go well, it will". I like the ones without my name on them the best. To me they have better energy. (More expansive and not as constrictive). But I have noticed that about 1/4th of the people that I've given them to like the ones with my name on them the best if given a choice.
I figure that you gotta give the people what they want.
